Impulsiveness vs the Holy Spirit

But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, Jude 20-21

Impulsiveness; this is a natural human trait as is reaction. Both of these are ignored by our Lord Jesus, as His response is always patient with a calm strength that is never in a panic. Our human nature is inherent in us but we must not allow it develop our views of spirituality and faith. Both impulsivity and reaction are hindrances to the development of the disciple for their spiritual maturity in Christ.

Many times the Spirit of God has come to me to show me what my impulsiveness and reaction is doing in my life and immediately I am very aware and self conscious of my own foolishness in the situation. Both of these traits are easily seen in the life of a child very early, but in an adult it spells selfishness and entitlement (being spoiled) which is the opposite of the fruit of the Spirit. Impulsiveness needs to be stopped so that intuition and a conversation with the Holy Spirit can take place before reacting. This process takes discipline and practice. Real spiritual discipleship in the Holy Spirit is built on His grace towards us and our willingness to submit to Him in every area of our lives.

In our own human natures we can face crisis … and we usually do so with our pride and stubbornness, but what does it really get us? But if we are to navigate the drudgery of everyday life with the right attitude it will take the supernatural grace and infusion of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. To live in that place of the ordinary, unnoticed, and ignored existence we will need discipline as a disciple of Christ. We read the scriptures and see all of the supernatural works of God coming through the disciples and desire to be used the same way… yet we don’t do them. Because .. it takes us being able to live exceptionally in the ordinary drudgery of life filled with His Holy Spirit guiding us and directing us in all those ordinary things, on those streets, offices, and work places among all the ordinary people. And that process takes a lifetime of work .. and doesn’t take place in five minutes. Jesus says… “Take up your cross daily and follow Me.” It is a daily discipline and walk in relationship with Him… “Praying in the Holy Spirit.”
