For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8
God has given you a ‘measure’ of faith. So… what is our job now? To shape our character around that God implanted faith. What is virtue? Strong’s Greek 703 refers to the moral and spiritual excellence that both belongs to God and is cultivated in believers. While rare in the New Testament, its five appearances form a carefully placed thread, weaving divine character into Christian conduct and community witness. (Biblehub is used in definitions in this devotional) Moral and spiritual excellence … does that describe you? Be honest. Ask the Holy Spirit how you can to begin to do that.
What knowledge is Peter talking about here? This Greek word gnosis appears twenty-nine times, spanning Luke, Romans, both Corinthian letters, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, the Pastoral Epistles, and 1 and 2 Peter. It describes everything from the initial understanding that accompanies conversion to the mature discernment required for leadership and spiritual warfare. The contexts cluster around five themes: revelation of God, salvation in Christ, charismata, ethical formation, and warnings against counterfeit claims.
Self-control here really is your ability to submit to the Holy Spirit’s direction in the moment of decision. Are you that close to Him that you can hear His instruction the moment you need to?
If you do hear Him regularly than you will need the next quality of steadfastness which is the Greek word hupomoné. Strong’s Greek 5281 (hypomonē) conveys steadfast endurance that clings to God in the face of pressure. More than passive waiting, it is active, faith-filled perseverance that refuses to abandon obedience or hope. While English versions alternately render the term “endurance,” “perseverance,” or “patience,” its essence is a Spirit-empowered tenacity that remains under trial until God’s purpose is fulfilled.
Godliness is the Greek word eusebeia. Godliness is a comprehensive, God-centered way of life marked by reverence, devotion, and practical obedience. In Scripture it unites right belief with right behavior, springing from regeneration and empowered by the Holy Spirit. The New Testament employs the term to describe both the inner posture that honors God and the outward conduct that reflects Him.
Brotherly affection is the Greek word philadelphia. The noun occurs six times, each time describing the mutual affection that is to characterize believers within the household of faith. The contexts span exhortation, ethical instruction rooted in salvation, and the progressive virtue-chain of sanctification. No New Testament writer treats it as optional; rather, it is presented as an essential evidence of regeneration and a non-negotiable guideline for congregational life.
And the Greek word love / agape here is the culmination of the all of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). The noun occurs 116 times across twenty‐six New Testament books. It is never used of romantic passion and only rarely of natural affection. Rather, it denotes a holy, self‐giving disposition that originates in God, is displayed perfectly in Jesus Christ, and is implanted in believers by the Holy Spirit. The frequency of the term in the writings of John and Paul underscores its centrality to apostolic theology and ethics. The key idea here is that it is “implanted” by God within us. Who does the planting? The Holy Spirit. Do you recognize that fruit within you BY Him?
Are you digging into the scriptures asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten you with revelation of what He wants within you, and what He wants you to do … each day? Character work takes time and focus, on your part. Are you walking these things out together with Him?
Jesus lead the way. Holy Spirit help me hear you. Father I want to be completely faithful to YOU!

Lots of good things to think about my friend. You covered a lot of ground in a short period. Each subject could probably be its own devotional.
I like the deeper dives though
This was really good to read and very encouraging to examine areas that are being done well, and also for areas that could use some attention.
