The Fear of Uncertainty

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 1 John 4:18

What is possibly the most terrifying to the human experience? Uncertainty. Not knowing what will happen and the possibility of death. As I lay in bed last night I pondered how many people are terrified of the great uncertainty in their lives. Fear creeps into the soul and causes so many bad effects in the individual. As a science minded individual I see the processes of the Creator in His creation. The intelligent design of this world is remarkable and astounding as one goes and explores the details of how this world works. But one begins to realize that at the core — things are very predictable as you learn the basics of a thing. Actually human behavior is very predictable.  We definitely are creatures of habit and comfort. Our enemy knows our predictability and how we will react to things — as they have been studying us for millennia. It is easy for the enemy to set up snares for us as we will so often only do what we have done before.

I’ve come to realize that the only unpredictable thing in the entire universe is …. God Himself. God actually is the uncertainty from the created perspective. Hebrews 13:8 says this about Jesus, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” God doesn’t change. Yet because of the infinite nature of God the created (finite) can never know Him completely. So to the finite the Creator is seen as unpredictable.

This aspect of unpredictability and uncertainty is overcome by those living in the Kingdom of God. Not that they can predict God, but that they personally know His goodness, kindness, grace, mercy, peace, joy, and unending love towards them. That relationship and closeness with God eventually makes life an .. adventure of great discovery. Fear gives way to faith and we step into His love knowing He has us in the ‘palm of His Hand’. Even death no longer has any sway to a citizen of the Kingdom, as they know what He has promised them and hold it with absolute certainty in their hearts.

“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:55

Hebrews chapter 11 is worth reading and pondering. What was it that made those individuals so strong to meet their physical deaths with such courage? They were certain of their future.

So I say all of this to teach you what your most effective weapon is in this spiritual battle in your life. It is Him Himself. He is everything you need. The Holy Spirit is your Teacher, Guide, Instructor, Counselor, and Interpreter of His Word and heart for you. The Holy Spirit’s relationship with you is the one you should nurture, as He has ALL the answers to every question, fear, and decision you have and need to make. How do you nurture that relationship? Actually it is conversational prayer with Him. Learning and listening to His Voice. Reading the Word and allowing Him to interpret it to your heart. As we learn to walk with Him throughout our days — we begin to understand His ways in the most basic way. As His depths know no end, eternity will be an adventure getting to know Him in ways our imaginations cannot currently fathom.

We must work at putting our hearts and fears into His Hands. Being honest before Him of our need for Him .. in all of our lives. Humbly bowing our wills to Him knowing His way actually is the most loving way.

Do you want to confuse your enemy? Follow His lead.
