Discern(ing) definition

Discern(ing) :definition.

2 Sam 4:17
Hebrew word- shama / to hear

Psalms 19:12 / Prov 16:21

Hebrew word – bin / to discern / perceive (with the senses) / understand, know (with mind) /observe, mark, give heed to, distinguish, consider (with attention) / have discernment, insight, understanding

Hebrews 5:14 / 1 Cor 12:10

Greek word – diakrisis / the act of judgment / distinguishing; hence: deciding, passing sentence on; the act of judgment, discernment.

(properly, a thorough judgment, i.e. a discernment (conclusion) which distinguishes “look-alikes,” i.e. things that appear to be the same.)

There is natural discernment through the senses and there is also spiritual discernment through the Spirit. Being able to recognize the counterfeits (i.e. lies of the enemy).

Greek word – akoé / hearing, the sense of hearing / properly, hearing; used of inner (spiritual) hearing that goes with receiving faith from God (Ro 10:17), i.e. spiritual hearing (discerning God’s voice; see also Gal 3:2,5, Gk text). [biblehub.com]

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith Galatians 3:1-5

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

Greek – So faith {is} from hearing (akoé) and hearing (akoé) through {the} (rhēmatos) Word of Christ.

Rhema Word – personal Word given / spoken from God to you and ‘heard’ / received in your inner heart / soul / mind.  From these Rhema Word(s) from Christ to us directly in our inner being and is how our faith is divinely given by God and founded. These spiritually given Word(s) are ‘heard’ inwardly / within our inner soul / person.

Are you recognizing His Voice in your ‘inner’ person? Hearing in your mind and soul? Do you carry on conversations there with Him? Do you ask Him questions? Is He explaining the Word (Logos) / scriptures to you in your inner being?

To ‘graduate’ from the ‘milk’ of the Word (foundational doctrines) you must be able to hear Him within you and follow His leading.

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:12-14

This is the ‘work’ of a spiritually mature person — who wrestles inwardly daily with the Spirit’s revelation, conviction, and instructions. Learning how to submit, obey, and be able to carry out His moment by moment instructions.

Is the Holy Spirit teaching you how to discern? Are you learning how to ‘hear’ Him inwardly clearly? This is the basis of real spiritual understanding and growth. If you want to be spiritually mature you must learn how to discern things spiritually.
