For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. Romans 12:3
Direct Greek word for word translation of this verse… “I say for through the grace having been given to me to everyone being among you not to be high-minded above what it behooves [you] to think but to think so as to be sober-minded to each as God has allotted a measure of faith.”
On being ‘think of himself more highly’ or to be high-minded …
Biblehub: “Humility is not optional ornamentation but integral to saving faith, for grace cannot coexist with self-exaltation (James 4:6). The term therefore exposes pride as a theological contradiction—exalting human ability where only divine gifting suffices. (Romans 12:3) guards the doctrine of grace by rooting every ministry function in God’s sovereign distribution.”
On thinking with ‘sober judgment’ or to be sober-minded…
Biblehub: “Strong’s Greek 4993 marks a uniquely Christian concept of restored rationality under the lordship of Christ. It speaks not merely of level-headedness but of a redeemed mind that thinks in harmony with God’s revealed will, allowing believers to live prayer-filled, service-oriented, and mission-minded lives.”
On the issue of a ‘assignment’ of faith or the allotted measure of faith…
Biblehub: “Greek 3307 (merizō) centers on the idea of dividing, distributing, or apportioning. Its New Testament appearances span narrative, parable, exhortation, and doctrinal argument, giving the term a rich range of connotations that together communicate both God’s orderly generosity and the self-destructive nature of sinful division.”
There’s the intellectual and some theological understanding of this verse. And the Holy Spirit adds the ‘punch’ to the ‘understanding’ of this verse within our souls. He convicts us with specific instances and points to direct actions and words where we have trespassed the scriptural moral line. Often, I am given “video” and “audio” in my mind by the Holy Spirit of my … sin. There is no denying it. Yet we can dismiss the Holy Spirit and His evidence as Scrooge put it as “just some undigested potato” giving us bad thoughts, and deny the ‘work’ He is attempting in our lives.
Hard conversations are only good for those willing to see the truth. Otherwise, the conversation it is just like chaff in the wind. If you can’t or won’t listen to the Holy Spirit you are only left with your own thinking and interpretation of scripture which is incredibly dangerous and ignorant. But free-will allows us to do so. So, we have MANY people oblivious to what the Holy Spirit wants to do in their lives, who then are stuck in their pride, fear, or lust (discontentment). These iniquities are the polar opposite of life IN the Holy Spirit. Denial of the Holy Spirit’s work and ministry towards us is incredibly stupid and dangerous for our souls.
We ARE made in God’s image – we all have value because of that fact. But we also have been given an inner conscience placed by God within us that is the inherent warning siren of good and evil. This too can be seared by our own choices of denial of the Truth and God.
through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 1 Timothy 4:2
Many choose to deceive themselves and believe a lie. Don’t be one of them. Choose to invite the Holy Spirit to take up residence in your body and make it His temple. Choose to learn to discern His voice within you. Choose to ask Him for advice when you have decisions to make. Choose to believe He KNOWS better than you. Choose to be obedient to the things He asks you to do. And do them right away. Be quick about it. Show Him you WANT to have Him give you more advice, by listening and doing what He has already given you. Don’t play with the ‘legal’ boundaries of the ‘law’ but seek the heart of God.
Be humble, grateful, repentant, and obedient to the Spirit of God.
Be wise and meditate on the Truth the Holy Spirit brings to remembrance to your mind.
Amen?
