For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:16-21
Prophecy. Has the Holy Spirit poured that gift through you yet? Prophecy is for the Body of Christ.
Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 1 Corinthians 14:1
Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers. 1 Corinthians 14:22
All prophecy in my perspective is an invitation of love from the Father to ‘discuss’ with Him. He wants to draw us into intimate conversation with Him and for us to ask Him questions. Although prophecy can sometimes be future-casting and a warning it is for the present moment. Have you asked the Holy Spirit about prophecy? I’d encourage you to do so. When first asking the Father about prophecy and it’s purpose I received a ‘parable’ in my mind which I’ve never forgot. (very much like spiritual teaching).
There was a little five year old boy who was learning to climb. The boy saw the back fence in his backyard and saw a place where he could climb it. It short time he climbed up and began to walk the top rail of the fence. Just then the boy’s dad came out to the back yard and was watching his son. The dad then said to the boy, “Son …I see pain in your future.” (basically the dad ‘prophesied’ to his son)
Now the boy has some options after hearing his dad. One …he can ignore his dad and keep going. Or two.. he can listen to his dad and stop and ask his dad some questions. Like… “What do you mean dad?” The boy’s dad who knows more about the backyard and fence and explains to his young son. “Son … that top rail is rotted out just on the next rail of wood you’re about to step on, and if you step on it, it will give way and you will fall. Now there is a cactus plant right below that rail — and falling into it could really hurt. So I suggest you turn around and go back the way you came.” Now the boy still has a decision whether to listen and believe his dad or not.
We know SO little as we walk this life. Wouldn’t it be better to get help from the One who knows our ‘backyard’ best? About one third of the scriptures in the Bible can be considered prophetic. I smile when I think of that. Why? So much the Father wants to discuss with us! He wants to help you navigate your path WITH Him! He wants to show you examples in the past of how people got off the path and how much He was calling them back to the right path, and how all of that relates to you right now!
Prophecy can help us. It is a “gift”. Something to desire to have.
Consider this …
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. Romans 12:4-8
Is this the way your group in fellowship works? Are the gifts of the Holy Spirit present in your meetings together? Why not? It is not wrong to ask Him. Is your ‘service’ so structured that there is no place for the Holy Spirit? Or is the gathering too large for any real fellowship with each other?
Desire prophesy. Ask Him for it.
