Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—His plan that was previously hidden, even though He made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8
Oh how I love mystery, …don’t you? God is SO much bigger than we can fathom and there will ALWAYS be greater things to explore with Him and more for Him to reveal to us about Himself. This idea was described by Isaiah as he prophesied through the Holy Spirit this well-known scripture.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord.
“And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so My ways are higher than your ways
and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
Walking and talking with the Lord in the mornings is such a rich place to engage with Him. There came an idiom to my mind that He wanted to ‘unpack’ with me this morning as I walked. It is one that is fairly well known and it is this: Familiarity breeds contempt. He first wanted to highlight my marital relationship. Soon after the ‘honeymoon’ phase of the marriage we become more and more ‘familiar’ with our spouse. Yet we are created in His image and are a masterpiece of His creation. There is a created depth to EVERY individual that is beyond much of our current comprehension. There IS still a mystery to your spouse that needs to be explored, cherished, and joy to be found in the revealing – if we go with His advice and listen to His whispers to our mind and hearts concerning our beloved marital partners. Rather than listening to our own set understanding (our familiarity of them) of who our beloved is … can we be ‘in love’ with asking their Creator what He wants us to explore in them? Can we learn to ask good intriguing questions of our beloved? Are we willing to be patient and listen to them as they try to unpack their thoughts and feelings to us without quickly dismissing or judging them? Can you try to form words of what is going on in your soul and describe it to them? Do you even give time to that type of communication? Are you courageous enough to share those extremely revealing fragile feelings and thoughts? Being ‘brave’ means to face the HUGE fear that stands before you and to walk through it. For bravery to even exist there has to be fear. Let’s ask the Creator of our beloved what mystery in our marital spouse He wants us to explore. Let’s not allow the ‘familiar’ to bog us down in going forward to the exciting mystery that lies within all of us especially in our close relationships. There is ALWAYS more to explore.
What really is God’s love… that extremely mysterious glorious thing we all need SO bad? Don’t get lulled into the ‘familiar’ of your marriage partner. KEEP EXPLORING! The same goes for all the close relationships you have. Don’t allow the enemy to solidify your idea of who they are. They are God’s masterpiece! There is SO much there, way beyond what we currently know and understand.
Isn’t our relationship with Jesus the same way?
