But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. Numbers 14:24
Every morning when I rise, I look forward to sitting with the Lord in front of my computer wondering what He wants to tell me, show me, and teach me. In prayer I listen for His words. Often a scripture or phrase is highlighted in my spirit and off we go. I’ve seen over the past years since I began this work of writing devotionals …a pattern. Whatever my latest concern or what I see in the world or the evil that is so prevalent on display – the Lord counters it and gives me the ‘opposite’ message for the devotional. He definitely sees what I don’t and has a ‘different Spirit’. The Holy Spirit confirming to me over and over with scripture after scripture the ways of the Lord are NOT like our ways.
For many years I struggled with my cycles of thinking. My mind wouldn’t often ‘let go’ of a fear or a hurt or a troubling situation. Like a hamster on a wheel my mind would spin and spin. The more I learned to stop and just ‘sit’ with Jesus, the more I learned that He actually had the answers for my troubled soul and mind. I had to learn to sit still … often in silence and listen to the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit deep within me. I had to be content to just ‘be’ with Him. The Holy Spirit would lead me to the Truth which often was difficult to understand. So, I began to sit and ask questions of Him. Learning that His ways were DEFINITELY not mine. He often would give me assignments that seemed to be off in ‘left field’. I thought that many of the assignments were really weird and honestly… I didn’t want to do them. Some of them made me feel so silly. But the more I was obedient to the assignments the more I saw Him work in me and in others. So many made no sense to me… but the results were so obviously effective in my life and in others. I learned to just ‘go with it’ and not care if I looked like a crazy man or sounded like a ‘fool’.
The Holy Spirit IS definitely different than the spirits in the world. The more I get to know Him the more I know He is NOT predictable. To follow His instructions will often not seem ‘logical’ or even ‘reasonable’ to you. Yet … simple obedience will bring amazing results and you will get to see Him work. I have used some of examples of my experiences with Him in the fictional novels He has had me write. Some of the experiences have been really ‘out there’. Being willing to look like a ‘crazy’ person and say things that seem totally ‘off’ has become a fairly normal experience in my life with Him. I have learned that there is a ‘tribe’ He has made for these kinds of weird purposes, and I am part of it. He has wonderfully and specifically made YOU for His purposes. This life is about discovering many of those purposes. Finding them can bring such joy to our souls. Over the years I have met many in my ‘tribe’ – and it has been such a joy to learn the incredible and beautiful diversity and yet see the same kind of ‘purpose’ built into them.
