A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion. Proverbs 18:2
And they came and said to Him, “Teacher, we know that You are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For You are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” Mark 12:14
As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. Romans 14:1
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5
The etymology of the word ‘opinion’ is Middle English opinioun, borrowed from Anglo-French & Latin; Anglo-French opinion, borrowed from Latin opīniōn-, opīniō “what or how one thinks about something, expectation, estimation, reputation,” from opīn-, base of opīnārī “to hold as an opinion, think, have in mind” (of obscure origin) + -iōn-, -iō, suffix of verbal action.
It seems in today’s culture opinion is beginning to be held higher than the ‘truth’. What one ‘believes’ becomes ‘their truth’ and they cannot be convinced otherwise by facts or evidence. The Bible once held as ‘truth’ is now seen as just an outdated, ancient, mythological, collection of documents. Today’s culture and general populous’ opinion now for many over-rides any Biblical standard. Social media has lowered the IQ of the Truth. Now the very meaning of the word ‘truth’ is debated. The enemies of God have worked extremely hard to erase the Truth and replace it with opinion and confusion.
This strategy of the enemies of God is NOT new, but the effect of the strategy has certainly risen in the last few decades. Truth is definitely under attack. Can the Holy Spirit change your opinion of something you are so sure of? How stubborn are you? Are you defiant when He gently corrects you? Does He ever ask you a question? Why would the God who knows EVERYTHING ask you a question? Maybe you need to ponder and question your own opinion and beliefs? Do you understand the entire depth and meaning of the entire scriptures? Or do you actually need His help, since He inspired what was written in them? So… can we interpret things wrongly? Can we learn wrong interpretations given to us from someone we think we trust? How important is it to listen to the Spirit of God when interpreting scripture for your own understanding and life decisions? How much is our opinion worth in God’s court?
Do you actually seek the Truth? Is it still important to you? So important that you are willing to change what you think and do? Where do you go to seek the truth? AI? The internet? Whom do you seek out when wanting to hear the Truth? Does their life show an abundance of fruit of the Truth? Do academic degrees have any effect on the Truth? Do you believe a doctor because they just are one? Do you believe every pastor because they say they are one? What is your personal filter for the Truth? How do you actually discern the Truth? These are all important questions.
My go to? The Holy Spirit.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:25-26
Father… I want to know the Truth as deep and wide as You can give it to me. Jesus show me Your Truth and heart. Holy Spirit show me Jesus!
