Desperate Soul

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;

    heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.

My soul also is greatly troubled.

    But you, O Lord—how long?

Turn, O Lord, deliver my life;

    save me for the sake of your steadfast love. Psalms 6:2-4

He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalms 23:3

I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,

    because you have seen my affliction;

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;

    my eye is wasted from grief;

    my soul and my body also. Psalms 31:7,9

Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. Psalms 33:20

As a deer pants for flowing streams,

    so pants my soul for you, O God.

My soul thirsts for God,

    for the living God.

When shall I come and appear before God?

My tears have been my food

    day and night,

while they say to me all the day long,

    “Where is your God?” Psalms 42:1-3

Our soul is often a barometer to the swirling frequencies, atmospheres, circumstances, hopes dashed, frustrations, unmet expectations, and other things surrounding us. Who can satisfy our ‘soul’? Who can fill that gapping hole in our chest? So many strike out to fill that hole with things, or physical relationships, or drugs, or alcohol, or religion, or work, or money, all in attempt to satisfy and lesson the pain of that nagging hole within us. But there is only One who can actually ‘fill that hole’. For that hole is to filled with Him and ONLY Him. It was created for Him to fill. Trying to fill it with anything else will never satisfy. Blaming others for your gapping soul hole will never work or help you.

That truth is hard to hear because we want the ability to fill it ourselves without the need for Him or anyone else. We want to be able to blame others for our soul problems. David was very aware of his soul needs and that God was his only Source. He also didn’t hold back expressing his need to God of what his soul was feeling. Our emotions are housed within our souls and are often described as a stormy sea, with whipped waves, and strong dark winds. There is One who can calm the waves and winds… with just a ‘word’. The same is with our stormy soul… and His ability to speak one word to satisfy it’s need. But unfortunately He often is the last One we turn to .. and usually it is in dire desperation. He can restore our soul with just a touch, a look, or a word. It is what we so desperately need from Him.

Can you be like David and pour out your soul before God? Expressing your deepest desperate soul needs? Can you express your belief in Him, that He is able to meet your needs? Can you surrender yourself to His control and let go of your own, or your need to try to control all of your attempts to satisfy your own needs, by controlling all of your surrounding relationships or situations? Can you put ALL of your hope in ONE Person (Jesus), and allow Him to meet ALL of your needs? Sounds very religious doesn’t it? It will never work if it is religious or attempt to make it a formula. It will only work in reality in real relationship with Him. How exactly does one do that? The only way is through the Holy Spirit. He is the One who indwells us … if we ask Him to. He is to be the One that occupies that ‘soul hole’.

What is required? Honesty. Confession. Repentance. Vulnerability. Transparency. Humility. Surrender. It takes courage to ask the Holy Spirit to examine our hearts and inner person to reveal what needs to be changed and removed and filled and planted with His fruit. And He is the only One who really knows you better than you know yourself. Only He is able to get to the very root of your need and problems, and give you healing.

He actually is the ‘answer’. Simple explanation. It is not so simple to surrender for most of us. We must learn to honestly wrestle with Him. Wrestle with our own shortcomings, iniquities, flaws, and our unwillingness to confess them before Him. Some people have to write it out in poetry or song — like David. Some have to journal it out like Jeremiah. Some have to go walk alone to pray it through with the Holy Spirit. But WE ALL need to find our way .. to express our deepest needs.. to Him.

Is your soul in desperation? GO TO HIM! Pray, shout, cry out, sob, yell, whatever you need to do .. but express it TO HIM. Tell Him how much you need Him. Do you love Him? Really and truly? Tell Him!
