Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. Matthew 7:6

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Matthew 13:45-46

Obviously pearls have been highly prized for millennia. They are often mentioned alongside other jewelry, gems, and luxury items.

So what exactly do you think Jesus is talking about in Matthew 7:6? Of course the Bible commentaries are not all agreed, which kind of proves my point that everyone who reads the scriptures needs the One who inspired them to translate them to the heart of the reader. Without the Holy Spirit teaching you — everything is just a guessing game.

But from what I can discern and from my own questioning the Holy Spirit — Jesus is referring the to the Truths He has placed into your heart via Rhema Words and by actual personal encounters with Him like the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Or visions or dreams He has given you personally. These are personal cherished “pearls” held within your soul. Basically my take is — be careful who you share your pearls with. I’ve now taken the practice of asking His permission before sharing ANY of my pearls with anyone. So many just won’t understand. Plus sharing deep spiritual truths and encounters often are very hard to put into words. And those not ready to hear them will just ‘throw your pearls in the mud’ dismissing you as a crazy person.

But it’s upon these ‘pearls’ in which our faith is established and grown.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

The wordword” in that scripture is Rhema. It is the personal ‘Word’ spoken to your heart via Christ / Holy Spirit — upon which your faith arrives.

Our spiritual pearls are very valuable to us. They are cherished within our hearts.

When the days have grown dark and scary — it’s good to revisit one’s pearls. To KNOW, remember, and rehearse the encounters and Words given to you directly by Christ / Holy Spirit. It’s interesting to me that in John’s description of the heavenly city that each gate was made from a single pearl.

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. Revelation 21:21

The gate / entrance to the heavenly city is through a pearl. Our faith is built upon the ‘pearl(s)’ He has given us. I think there is a correlation there.

Seek Him. Ask Him. Listen for Him. Obey what He tells you — personally. Develop your ability to hear Him deeply and often.

For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light do we see light. Psalms 36:9

  1. I have always loved pearls. And, this post was a gem-really appreciated it.
I believe that one of the greatest gifts given to us through the power of the Holy Spirit is discernment.. Knowing deeply when, where and who to share the Gospel with. And, to pray!
Love your writing. It inspires and I learn much. Very precious, like a pearl. ✝️
