Obedience in the mundane

Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. John 21:12-13

I always thought that this statement was strange … “Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.” Was there something so radically different about Jesus after the resurrection that it made them even question? I too have gotten that ‘feeling’, “Is this really you Lord?”, many times when hearing His Voice in my mind. We can have a dramatic experience with Jesus and still .. question. Yet ..we ‘know’ the encounter with Him is real. So while the statement has struck me as strange — I can still relate in some ways.

Jesus is often calling us to obedience in the … mundane. Things we don’t see as important, and maybe they’re not in our minds but with Him they take on new significance and meaning. Are we attentive to His instructions as we are going through our daily chores and routines? Is He allowed to change up our breakfast plans? Is He allowed to change up the direction of our daily commute? Is He allowed to change how we go about our daily business? Have we set ourselves on ‘autopilot’ and zoned out many times during our day, when we could be conversing with Him?

Jesus is showing up and changing a lot of people’s lives right now, snatching them out of their daily routine and showing them a different path and way. Who might these people be? Those who have been seeking Him and the Truth. Those who are constantly seeking Him in every part of their lives. Obviously this is beyond the religious routines, and formats, but actually from their hearts … that they are pursuing Jesus in everything.

We can get very habitual in our daily routine, doing what must be done while being on ‘autopilot’. Can we stay ‘awake’ during these times and actually begin our conversation with Him during those times? Can we turn off the noise in the car and begin praying and asking Him things while we drive? Can we engage with Him while going through all times we are alone and not having to engage with anyone else? Have we made this our ‘habit’?

Do you think Jesus won’t meet you in your mundane tasks of the day? Or that He wouldn’t have anything to say about them?

Maybe Jesus is inviting you to breakfast…
