saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.” Exodus 15:26
Jehovah-Ropheka the Lord our healer.
Here the title is a derivative of the Hebrew word ‘rapha’ meaning ‘to heal’. The word ‘rapha’ has also been translated as physician, purified, repaired, become fresh, and completely healed in other passages of scripture.
Gill’s Exposition of the Entire Bible commentary says this …“I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians; in any of the plagues inflicted on them, which they were witnesses of; from these they should be preserved, if obedient, but if not they must expect them, or what was similar to them, for I am the Lord that healeth thee; both in body and soul; in body, by preserving from diseases, and by curing them when afflicted with them; and in soul, by pardoning their iniquities, which, in Scripture, is sometimes signified by healing.”
Healing can be manifest is all areas of our being, spirit, soul, and body. I am reminded of the story of the cripple who was lowered through the ceiling by his friends to get to Jesus. Jesus first dealt with the man’s spirit and soul and healed those areas first. Sin affects the entire person. We often think of ‘sickness’ as a body thing, when mental sickness can be even more paralyzing and detrimental to the person. Being constantly plagued by spiritual oppression can also be very difficult to deal with. We don’t know exactly what the man was dealing with beyond his crippled legs — but I suspect he was also dealing with past sin — as that is the first thing Jesus dealt with in his healing.
“And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God.” Luke 5:18-25
As His representatives we too are called to pray for healing for others. Obviously the best way to pray is in agreement with the Holy Spirit. And also obviously that would require our ability to hear His Voice within us, giving us instructions as to what to pray for and the way to go about the actions He wants us to preform for the individual. Remember Jesus never healed anyone the same way in the recorded scriptures. Each instance was different, and of course Jesus was listening to the Holy Spirit as to the way He was to do it. The Trinity is the most unpredictable Power / Source / Being .. in the universe. God’s enemies can never predict what He will do next. Our best method of upsetting the enemies of God is to be led by the Holy Spirit for He will tell us what to do, and the enemy won’t have a clue what we’ll do next IF we are listening to the Holy Spirit and following His directions.
Do you need healing in an area of your life? Then go to the Great Physician who heals us… Jehovah-Ropheka.
