“I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. Exodus 20:2
Jehovah-Eloheka the Lord your God.
Here the Hebrew masculine word is a derivative of ‘Elohim’ with the connotation of ‘your’ in the in the title word. This title was used in the address right before delivering the complete ten commandments in chapter 20. If you’ve never read them completely before I highly suggest you do.
From Ellicot’s Commentary for English Readers…
“I am the Lord thy God.—The binding nature of commands upon the conscience depends upon the authority of the person who issues them. That there might be no dispute as to what the authority was in the case of the Decalogue, God prefaced the commands themselves by this distinct statement. By whomsoever they were communicated (see the first Note on Exodus 20:1), they were the commands of Jehovah Himself.”
Here the Father declares His authority and love / possession over the Israelites. The Father had made a covenant with them and thus brought them ‘out of Egypt’. By redeeming them He acquired the the further right to rule them as they owed their lives to Him. As we can see the parallel and precursor to the act Jesus Christ made for His Bride.
But like always the hearts of Men don’t always understand the price of the sacrifice made for them and choose to mock, ridicule, and rebel against the One who loves them. Real love requires a choice, and God did not take away their ability to ‘choose’ Him, or deny Him. Neither is anyone required to make Jesus THEIR Lord, even though He is the LORD of ALL. Three times in the scriptures the statement is made that eventually “every knee shall bow” to the Lord of Hosts.
The work and abiding Presence of the Holy Spirit is the most intimate relationship anyone can have. As He is …YOUR Maker. He knows you more than you know yourself. He designed you, formed you, and completes you. You were made for His love to reside INSIDE you for eternity. The more you work to understand His work via the Holy Spirit within you the more you will become who He made you to be. You won’t find any real fulfillment in life until He truly is submitted to and allowed to do His work within you. Real wisdom does not come apart from Him. Real love is impossible without Him. He gives you your faith. He is your true Teacher in ALL things.
Yet… very little is taught about Him. In religious circles the Holy Spirit is the LAST and seen as the least member of the Trinity. I’ve often wondered why. But now I know SOME of the reasons. In life experience with Him then sitting for years in the many religious settings you begin to see some of the ‘problems’ that come when you give the Holy Spirit His place and authority over the ‘meeting’. He is NOT One who can be controlled, only squelched and denied His place. Controllers don’t like anything that takes their authority or control away. In fact, most modern Churches have taken the place of the Holy Spirit in their congregants lives. It’s better for the ‘business’ of the church and spiritual leaders. The Presence of the Holy Spirit can seem VERY messy to the controllers. HE can’t be predicted and there’s the problem of Him constantly exposing the sin of the leaders.
Yet … He is THEIR God. Or is He? When we deny Him His place in our lives, what does that do to us? What does that make us?
Can He say to you …He is YOUR Lord God?
