Jehovah-Elohay

And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. Zechariah 14:5

Jehovah-Elohay the Lord My God.

This title was given by the prophet Zechariah in about 550-525BC who was one of the three prophets after the exile. Zechariah like the apostle John had a vision of different colored horses riding throughout the earth. The prophet had ten visions that laid out the future and the coming Messiah. The title ‘elohay’ is also a derivative of ‘elohim’ but includes the modifier of ‘my’ in the title. The title is used over a hundred times in the OT.

It was a period of extreme need when Zechariah received these visions much like the time John was living in at the end of his life. Their books are more similar than most understand, and are worth reading side by side. We as well, at this time in history, it is worth reading both of them to know and understand the ‘hope’ that is before us. The commentaries speak of this time to come and our hope.

From Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary… “The Lord Jesus often stood upon the Mount of Olives when on earth. He ascended from thence to heaven, and then desolations and distresses came upon the Jewish nation. Such is the view taken of this figuratively; but many consider it as a notice of events yet unfulfilled, and that it relates to troubles of which we cannot now form a full idea. Every believer, being related to God as his God, may triumph in the expectation of Christ’s coming in power, and speak of it with pleasure. During a long season, the state of the church would be deformed by sin; there would be a mixture of truth and error, of happiness and misery. Such is the experience of God’s people, a mingled state of grace and corruption. But, when the season is at the worst, and most unpromising, the Lord will turn darkness into light; deliverance comes when God’s people have done looking for it.”

From Matthew Poole’s Commentary… “The Lord my God shall come: as thus rendered it gives reason of this commotion of mind and this hasty flight. But it would be plainer if it were, as it may be, I think, read, and, or yet, O Lord my God, come, and bring all the saints with thee. As if it were said, Though it will, O Lord, put us into such fears; yet without such wonderful works we shall not have our hopes, nor see thy salvation; therefore, O Lord my God, come, and bring thy saints, holy ones, angels, with thee: and so will this be like that of St. John, Revelation 22:20, shutting up the visions of the new heaven and the new earth, and the appendages of them, with, Come, Lord Jesus.”

Crisis is like a refining fire, so is suffering and persecution. Zechariah had made God his God, and kept Him deep within his heart. So does anyone who has gone through many difficult trials and tests with God. We look forward to His coming with such zeal and joy, it is our highest and greatest heart’s desire.

Do have years of walking with the Holy Spirit, who has guided and seen you through many trials and difficulties? Do you know deep within your heart that you can say, “HE is MY GOD! Jehovah-Elohay!” Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to show you your ‘path’? Are you attentive to His Voice? When your path gets difficult and dangerous do you know that He has you in the palm of His hand? Spend your time now to ‘know’ Him, and press into Him, and follow His instructions for you, before your path gets very dangerous and crisis is upon you.

May we all be able to say with everything that is within us, Jehovah-Elohay!

Come Lord Jesus!!
