Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said,
“I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
Therefore go out from their midst,
and be separate from them, says the Lord,
and touch no unclean thing;
then I will welcome you,
and I will be a father to you,
and you shall be sons and daughters to me,
says the Lord Almighty.”
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1
How do defile our body and spirit? The body is defiled by sexual immorality. Our spirit is defiled by being in agreement with darkness. Our spirit which holds our will and makes choices can be defiled by stepping into agreements with un-Godly / dark forces and principles. Being unequally yoked means being attached to persons holding very different values that run contrary to faith and the kingdom of God. This especially speaks to the marriage bond. But we can also be greatly affected by contracts and agreements in business that run contrary to kingdom principles. We also can have long term friendships and relationships that eventually run counter to the path the Holy Spirit has for us. Everything in these types of situations will be detrimental to a follower of Christ trying to be free of sinful temptation. It has become quite obvious in our culture now like in the time of the first century Corinth believers of what is blatantly wicked and profane.
What isn’t so obvious is the agreements we have accepted without knowing it. Allowing the other party to invade our lives and decisions. This especially happens today with digital data and agreements. Can we agree by omission? Omission = something neglected or left undone, and apathy toward or neglect of duty. Meaning if we don’t click this ‘box’ we agree to being … invaded. We will sign documents without really knowing what is in them – just so we can speed up the process. We will take drugs just because someone says they are ‘safe and effective’ without looking at the informed consent papers or dangers. We come into ‘agreement’ with things and NEVER check with the Voice of the Holy Spirit as to what decision we should be making. These decisions can possibly defile our spirit.
How do we know when something is light or dark? Have we taken the time to observe? To see what kind of fruit is being produced? Don’t be impatient and quick to decisions, but be mindful of the Holy Spirit and His guidance.
Our decisions can have a much greater effect on our physical, emotional, and spiritual health, than we understand. The Holy Spirit is supposed to be our Counselor – do we actually have a relationship depth with Him that we can listen to His instruction and guidance?
