Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, Matthew 13:5
Are you good soil? Do you have ‘depth’? Are you willing to go ‘deep’ to find the answers about yourself? Can the Holy Spirit speak to you about your ‘core’ issues? Are you willing to go to that ‘fallow’ hard ground deep within your soul and allow the Holy Spirit to break it up? Are you ready to address iniquities in your life? Sin might be the actual ‘weed’ but the iniquity is the character flaw that is drawn to produce that weed. Sometimes we can’t seem to stop producing weeds / sin … no matter how hard we try. That usually means there are iniquities that need to be ‘rooted’ out within your character. It will take someone to cut deep into your soul at the root of the issues.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
“Living and active, and discerning thoughts and intentions of the heart?” What is this a reference to? It is a direct reference to the work by the Holy Spirit within a person. The Holy Spirit cutting deep into those parts of us that are literally the very core of us. Why would the Holy Spirit be cutting so deep into us? To cut out our iniquities, and plant His fruit within us. Has the Holy Spirit been planting His fruit within you? Do you recognize them? Has He asked you to ‘water’ and tend those small beginnings of His work planted in your character and soul? Have you been getting ‘tests’ and trials that help you utilize those tiny beginnings where He is working in you?
Do you understand He has to remove many things deep within you that was placed there by so many wounds and wrong teachings and difficult circumstances at no fault of yourself? What kind of things? Galatians chapter 5 has a good long list right before mentioning the nine fruit of the Spirit.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
This is a portion of scripture that is good to understand. Many things just mentioned might not be easily understood right away, but more study and searching might be necessary so that the Holy Spirit can highlight some of things He wants to remove in you. At first glance you might right away have no inkling that any of those things are within you and dismiss them, but… are you brave enough to ask the Holy Spirit if any are within you now? This is ‘depth’ work. Are you really wanting to be ‘good soil’ for the Holy Spirit and Jesus to work in? Are you ready to be ‘attached’ deeply to the vine so that you can produce His fruit?
If you want to be good soil for Jesus then you’ll allow the Master Gardener to begin tearing things out of your soul and character so that He can plant what He wants growing in your life. This is an ongoing process throughout our entire lives. The more spiritually mature you are the deeper He can cut. So even though you may have felt that an ‘issue’ or flaw has been taken care of from your past … He may have only been doing preliminary surgery at that time and now that you’re older and more spiritually healthy — He may want to go into a deeper level of your soul to cut out roots and plant even deeper spiritual truths within you.
Are you deep soil He can plant in?
