But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26
The word ‘Helper’ in Greek in this verse is paraklétos which can be translated to an advocate, intercessor, a consoler, comforter, and helper. Paráklētos (“advocate, advisor-helper”) is the regular term in NT times of an attorney (lawyer) – i.e. someone giving evidence that stands up in court.
One of the Holy Spirit’s roles as found in this definition is one of an intercessor.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, Ephesians 6:18
To understand the Holy Spirit in our lives we need to search out the scriptures in every place we can to better learn how He moves, and interacts with people. We are of the New Covenant, which is a new ‘thing’ in regards to how God is living with His people when you look at all of history. For the last 2000 years those that committed their lives to Him (Jesus Christ) had the opportunity to be ‘filled’ / indwelled with His Holy Spirit. Direct access to God. THAT IS DIFFERENT!!!
Unfortunately the institutional Church doesn’t teach much on this phenomenon of being one with His Holy Spirit. What is He like? How does He move? How He changes a person? What is the evidence of Him being within us? What are the spiritual gifts He brings and how exactly do they work? What exactly does His fruit look like in our lives? Are you really wanting to go deeper with God? How much time have you spent scouring the scriptures about spiritual things? Have you done a deep dive on the things of the Spirit? Have you asked Him questions about the things you don’t understand? Are you willing to do the work yourself or do you just want the information handed to you? Which person will get more out of the information, the one really wrestling, struggling, and striving to know more and has all sorts of questions, or the person whom the information is just handed to? We need to be coming to Him with our questions. Learn to hear Him for yourself. Learn how to receive from Him and Him alone. Or you can just go back to the old covenant style of listening to someone else tell you what to do, and what they think God is telling you. Please don’t.
What do you know personally of intercession? How does it work? What is involved? What is it’s purpose? Have you ever been in His ‘school of intercession’? The spiritual disciplines are exactly that … discipline. They are not easy. Just as fasting is a spiritual discipline for the body, intercession is the spiritual discipline for the mind. Both take the action of your will to be engaged over the arguments going on within you as you learn what these disciplines are all about. The Holy Spirit is our intercessor. So learning that discipline will only teach you how to be ‘in the flow’ with Him that much more.
There are many facets to the Holy Spirit, some of us want to learn as much as we can about Him. Is that you?
