Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17
This is a very common quoted verse. And most people quickly interpret the meaning in the way they think. When you come across some of your most ‘favorite’ verses – do you ‘dig in’ with the Holy Spirit for the depths of His meaning? As a true ‘searcher’ do you research the original language, the setting (historical time and place it was said), and the culture and customs of the time? How zealous are you to really understand the ‘riches of the spiritual treasures’ in the Word? Are you open to the Holy Spirit teaching you something you don’t already know? Can you hear His probing questions in your mind? You know… those questions that cut straight to your core / inner soul / heart.
The theological commentaries are interesting on this verse as they take very different perspectives. In the original Hebrew there is nuance that is lost in most English translations. A direct word-for word translation of this verse from Hebrew to English reads this way “ [As] iron iron sharpens so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” The word ‘countenance’ here is פָנִים, the transliteration is paniym pronounced (paw-neem’) meaning face, presence, or countenance. The same Hebrew word was used for the Presence of God walking in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve before the fall.
From BibleHub: “In ancient Hebrew culture, the face was considered the most expressive part of the body, revealing emotions, intentions, and character. The concept of “face” or “presence” was significant in relationships, both human and divine. Being in someone’s presence implied a level of intimacy and communication. In the context of worship, seeking the “face” of God was synonymous with seeking His favor and guidance.”
What is also mentioned in the commentaries is not just the positive aspect of this scenario but the negative perspective of a man provoking another man to anger and bitterness. We can ‘sharpen’ each other in ‘bad’ ways if our own fleshly natures are in control. How often is your ‘countenance’ reflected in your facial expression? Does your face show your ‘temper’ or disposition visibly?
How are you at ‘sharpening’ others? Is it by the instruction and prompting from the Holy Spirit – or is it from your own fleshly nature? Is it from the wisdom of the Holy Spirit or is it from your learned intellect? Which one will have the greatest effect and spiritual value on your friend? How much do you love your friends? Do you love them enough to follow the Holy Spirit’s instructions and speak to them via the nine fruit of the Spirit, rather than from just your own emotions and desires / wants / needs? How in tune are you with the Holy Spirit when conversing with others? Does He direct your conversation and answers? Are you provoking / sharpening your friends to Godliness or to something else?
This is something to ponder and ask the Holy Spirit on how you are doing in this sharpening process with others. Then listen closely to His answer to you.
