Commandment #3

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Deuteronomy 5:11

So many see this in a very literal formal sense. But actually it has to do with the heart of the individual. Back then to the heathen or those outside of the nation of Israel, they would never take the name of God in vain, as they had zero respect for Him in the first place. Like in this culture those who loosely use “God Dam*” and “Jesus Christ” as swear adjectives in their speech aren’t really condemning themselves, as they are not part of the ‘family’ who actually have any relationship with Him. The ‘default’ is already in effect.

This commandment was for the ‘family’ of God. This is where the principle of the ‘fear of the Lord’ should be exercised, as understanding God and who He is … ‘is the beginning of wisdom’. Most of our bad usage of the name(s) of God wrongly come from our ‘sinful’ past or our fleshly nature being immersed in the culture around us, and we adopt the ‘practice’ almost unconsciously. This is where we need to submit to the conviction of the Holy Spirit in our lives to correct our wrongful habits, by allowing Him to redirect our ‘communication’ and our reactions.

Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers says… “Take . . . in vain.—Literally, Thou shalt not put the name of Jehovah thy God to vanity: i.e., to anything that is false, or hollow, or unreal. Primarily, it is false swearing that is forbidden here; but the extension of the principle to vain and rash swearing, or the light use of the Name without real cause, is sufficiently obvious.”

Using the Name of the Lord in vain — from a ‘family’ member is a display of the individual’s disrespect and callousness towards God. Of course today, it would make me question the individual’s intimate relationship with God and the Holy Spirit. It would be like constantly using your spouse’s name as a ‘curse’ word, and lowering the name of your ‘spouse’ to mean something evil, degraded, and a curse.

If an individual used their beloved spouse’s name as a constant ‘curse’ word, wouldn’t that make everyone who heard it wonder about that individual’s love for their spouse? Anyone who really ‘knows’ God intimately will use His Name with reverence and love. Obviously the enemy seeks to ‘pollute’ the ‘family’ of God as much as they can. Careless speech can be one of those polluting ways (reread James 3).

What’s the ‘cure’? The fruit of the Holy Spirit sown and grown deeply into the heart and soul of the individual. Growing a strong and vital relationship with the Holy Spirit where you daily have ‘conversations’ (listening prayer).

Has the Holy Spirit convicted you in the area of your ‘speech’ and communication? Certainly if He is working with you on His fruit of ‘self-control’ then your communication will be addressed by Him and the changes He wants you to make.

No one who really understands God experientially, relationally, and intimately would EVER use His Name(s) loosely or with disrespect. This is where this discipline of communication has to be centered, around the individual’s heart.
