A worthless witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity. Proverbs 19:28
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Proverbs 20:1
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. Matthew 27:31
Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. Galatians 6:7
Is there really a ‘mocking spirit’? Can I fall into the trap of mocking others rather than having the Lord’s perspective or heart towards someone? The obvious answer is …yes. Do I recognize when I am agreeing with that foul spirit? Who is the most mocked? God. It seems the enemies of God are CONSTANTLY mocking God and anyone who loves Him. Is that the crowd you want to been seen as agreeing with?
So mocking is defined as … imitating, esp. in derision, or so as to cause derision; mimicking; derisive. In Hebrew the word is לָעַב which means ‘to deride or jest’. In Greek the word is ἐμπαίζω which means properly, to sport someone, mock (scoff). Sounds like a a trait we can’t find in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
Asking the Holy Spirit about this trait — I was informed that it comes from someone who has difficulty with their own identity and that they are trying to gain it through all sorts of wrong avenues. Oooof. That hit hard with me. How many times has my own pride led me to mocking someone else – rather than understanding who I really am in Christ and how much He loves them as well? Too many. Wounds, and abuse, and bullying can lead to festering issues that if not healed by Him can lead to all sorts of bad ‘luggage’ being stored within our souls which can manifest in many ways including this bad habit of ‘mocking’ others. *sigh* Forgiveness needed. Unfortunately it seems …there is a never ending display of this trait in the halls of our country’s leaders currently. Our country is ripe with the mocking spirit now.
No matter how old I get — the Holy Spirit is still working on ‘cleaning me up’ from the inside. This is a constant lesson on humility before Him.
Let’s utilize HIS attributes rather than the bad traits of the enemies of God. This obviously will take a humility towards the Holy Spirit as He shows each one of us where we need to change and correct our behaviors.
Where are you with this issue? Does any of this ring in your spirit?
