Light and Shadow

The people who walked in darkness

    have seen a great light;

those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

on them has light shone. Isaiah 9:2

the people dwelling in darkness

    have seen a great light,

and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,

on them a light has dawned. Matthew 4:16

When scripture is repeated in both the OT and the NT, it should be pondered. When you look at these scriptures and think about what or who is the light? Let’s look at this analogy in the scriptures.

But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. John 11:10

So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. John 12:35

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 1 John 2:9

The opposite of the light is the .. shadow or darkness.

For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. 1 Chronicles 29:15

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalms 23:4

Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather! Psalms 39:6

Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,

prisoners in affliction and in irons,

for they had rebelled against the words of God,

and spurned the counsel of the Most High. Psalms 109:10-11

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.

Psalms 107:14

Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow. Psalms 144:4

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:17

Are you walking in the Light or in the shadows? How do you know? Does your soul sing of the light within you? Are you consumed with dark thoughts? Do you feel as if there is a cloud over you and you are sitting in the shadows? Are you constantly reminded of your failures, losses, and missteps? Are you haunted by sins and shadows of your past?

His indwelling brings light to one’s soul. The Presence of the Holy Spirit brings light and chases away the shadows and darkness within you. Have you invited Him to brighten your day? To show your the path of the light? Have your repented before Him of those things you knew were wrong?

Actually doing a soul check of light and dark within you is a good indicator of your current status of allowing Him to be filling your present moment.  Ask Him to fill you with His Light today, permeating every cell and crevice of your being. Invite Him to speak to you. Invite Him to teach you and give you wisdom and understanding. We have to begin to go to the Source Who is the Light.

Walk in the Light today.

  1. With so much darkness in the world today, and things once considered good by most have been flipped and are now bad, or even considered evil.
But, I try my best to focus on the light-asking the Holy Spirit to help me react in a way pleasing to God, that His light continues to shine through me . Hoping to light the path of someone struggling in the darkness.
Very good verses on light. Both from the OT & NT. A fav of mine since my youth has been James 1:17. As a kid I used to focus more on the “perfect gift”. Now I focus more on the Father of lights who never changes, A constant from above in this every changing world.

    1. Thanks Deb. My prayer has become that He would teach me to respond through Him rather than react from myself. My reactions always seem to get me in trouble. I agree that this world has become the very essence of Romans 1. I often find myself looking for the Light, and the Holy Spirit reminds me that He is within me. There will be many times that there will be no light unless we bring that which is in us and let it out for others to ‘see’. In my own strength it won’t be possible, thus I must rely on Him. Humble waiting, grateful repose, quick repentance.
